Daniel Jolliffe (CA)
Mobile Sculpture and Participatory Performance | 2004 – 2007
Daniel Jolliffe presents the project Berliner Stimmen in the context of urban interface | berlin. His work is a mixture of mobile sculpture and performance that examines the participatory moment. Visually, Berliner Stimmen is a sculpture mounted behind a bicycle, but its main function is performative. Over a period of three weeks, Jolliffe will cycle through the borough of Mitte, Wedding and Gesundbrunnen three times a week. While he is travelling, the loudspeaker broadcasts previously recorded one-minute calls. It is possible for each caller to have his message broadcast in the public space.
The past realisations of the project under the name of One Free Minute in San José and Vancouver have shown that the callers use this public platform for different reasons. The spectrum of the recorded messages includes private statements and stories as well as commercial announcements and political speeches.
In times when governments and public agencies are increasingly vigilant of who is saying what and where, citizens and activists can express their opinions in Berliner Stimmen freely and without fear of repression.
The recorded messages can be heard on the website of Berliner Stimmen.

“Stadtteilmanagement – Ackerstraße Nord” was founded to address a growing need for action and social change in the area around Ackerstraße in Mitte, Berlin. It was established by the Berlin Senate (City Council) and the Mitte Bezirksamt (District Office) in July 2005, and is run by The S.T.E.R.N. Society for Careful Urban Redevelopment Ltd.
Together with the residents and local activists we initiate and support plans to upgrade the qualities and potentials of the area, to develop a lively neighbourhood and to improve the conditions for employment and education, work and schooling. To this end we offer a network for activists, support for resident’s projects, advice for local individuals and clubs about how to realise ideas, and provide information about possible financial support for social and cultural projects.
Since 2005 several large projects have been realised: the development of the new playground at Stralsunder Straße/Strelitzer Straße; the “Cool Steps” project for security and crime prevention in the neighbourhood; as well as a street party planned for June 30, 2007 – motto and activities to be announced soon.
